Now both new and old players can experience the 18 year old MMORPG for free thanks to a new account tier called Endless Conquest. A pioneer of faction based PvP, DAoC is still remembered today for its large scale Realm Wars. they think because something takes time it must be difficult, which makes them dislike quality of life improvements.Dark Age of Camelot, or DAoC for short, has been a subscription based MMORPG since its release way back in 2001. Its community also tends to confuse difficulty with tedium, i.e. Uthgard has been okayish in terms of quality pretty good for PvE, but some of the bugs have had a crippling influence on competitive PvP (broken melee range, weird damage calculations, total immunity after resurrections, etc.).

They are probably going to reopen in a while (beta starts in 1-2 months IIRC), though.

Uthgard had been the longest running freeshard until they closed down when Genesis/Origins release stole their player base. It's been a couple of months since I last checked it out, but the amount of bugs, lag issues and unfinished stuff was discouraging. Usually one realm has a huge zerg that keeps taking undefended keeps (because the defenders just join the winning team) and 8v8 is pretty much dead. They have since added a bunch of overpowered items and made a new zerg RvR zone that has performance problems because they basically just cluttered it with random assets and made an underground fortress. Broadsword has taken over, and they're fairly incompetent. The official servers are no longer run by Mythic.
